The Fairfax Parks & Recreation Department is working to bring fitness and wellness opportunities to the Fairfax community. These programs are financed through program fees and are open to the community.

Participation will impact what programs are offered in the future. The entire community is welcomed and encouraged to participate in the planning and developing all recreation program offerings. StoryWalk™ is an exciting initiative that combines a children’s story with a popular walking route. A children’s book is selected, the pages are separated, laminated, and attached to wooden stakes. The stakes are then driven into the ground at regular intervals along paths so readers can follow the story as they walk the route.

StoryWalk™ was conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and caregivers to take young children on a short stroll that will be fun for all. StoryWalk™ helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both adults and children. StoryWalk™ aligns perfectly with the No Child Left Inside philosophy that stresses the vital importance of reconnecting children with the natural world. All are welcome to visit a StoryWalk™ and the experience is free.

The StoryWalk™ Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

This twelve-week training program will target the Fairfax Egg Run 5 or 10K race in early August. Class will meet twice during the week with optional weekend group runs. The focus will be on safe training principles, injury avoidance, nutrition, basic speed drills, and psychology. Beginning through intermediate runners are welcome. A great way to learn about running or become a better runner, meet people, and work towards a healthy and fun community-building goal.

Dave has trained and raced at various distances in running shoes, ice skates, skis, and bicycles. Bored with flat races, he recently completed his tenth marathon, climbing a 7000 ft mountain in Switzerland (mostly for some serious post-race, guilt-free cheese and chocolate indulgence).
